Style in the seventies was all about flared denims, sunglasses, platforms and a bold attitude. When I think about the seventies, studio 54 frequenters like Bianca Jagger, Diane Von Furstenburg and Grace Jones come to mind. These women were (and still are) carefree, creative and chic. Drawing on the spirit of the seventies, I took to the street to capture my interpretation of this era’s aesthetic. My everyday 70s streetstyle editorial is complete with flares, big sunglasses and tons of attitude!
3 Ways to nail 70s style
1.Trawl the thrift shops for flared denims. I discovered these jeans at a local 2nd hand store for only 70 ZAR (+/- $4.90). Besides, being the more affordable option, vintage pieces will give you a more authentic-looking 70s outfit. Make sure your high-waisted jeans fit correctly; if they are slightly bigger, consider taking them to your local tailor.
2.Avoid looking gimmicky. For example, I could have styled my look with a pussy-bow blouse, a big fur coat, and Farrah-Fawcett-flipped hair. Instead, I kept my look in the context of 2016, by pairing a plain grey T-shirt with a camisole, and wore a 5 day old blow dry. The aim is to always look as effortless as possible.
3.Confidence. Strut tall and smile (or pout).
