Athleisure can no longer be referred to as a trend; this style of dress has become so ingrained into our culture! It’s inspired designers and retailers to create new activewear divisions, caused heels-only fashion girls to invest in sneakers, and has made niche workoutwear labels skyrocket to business superstardom.
What Is Athleisure?
Athleisure can be described as the art of wearing workout clothes in social and work settings. There are countless opinions on where the trend originated. Some say it’s an extension of the business casual trend, where we’ve seen a laid back approach to office dressing (I discuss this here). Others say it’s the surge in people adopting healthier lifestyles. Either way, the past few years has seen a rise in the need for our everyday wear to be functional enough for us to engage in physical activity.
How To Look Awesome In Athleisure
Step 1: Know your body and accentuate your best assets. If you’re a curvy girl with a flat tummy, don’t be afraid to wear high waisted leggings and a crop top! If you have legs like Serena Williams then show them off in a tennis dress, a denim jacket and New Balance sneakers.
Step 2: Consider colour combinations. If you’re going to wear neon, ensure that the rest of your outfit is made up of solid black or grey items.
Step 3: There’s an appropriate athleisure outfit for every social and work setting. For example, wearing leggings to an office party can be seen as inappropriate, while you could wear fitted joggers to the same event an no one would bat an eyelash.
Athleisure Outfit Formulas
Formula 1: Top (Sweatshirt/T-Shirt) + Joggers +Heels
You’ll want to give this look a try, if you’re attending a gallery opening or painting the town red with your girls. Make a statement by investing in velour joggers (like these) and a velvet sweatshirt (like this one) and team them with a pair of heeled mules (like this pair). Puma designer, Rihanna has been spotted leaving the airport in this outfit combination.
Formula 2: Dress + Sneakers
This sports luxe outfit formula is my personal favourite! Elevate a simple black dress with a pair of embellished, designer kicks. Make a chic shirtdress look casual by pairing it with your favourite gym shoes. This look can be seen on, fitness fanatic, Karlie Kloss.
Formula 3: Leggings + Sports Bra/Crop Top + Outerwear + Sneakers (pictured below)
Before exiting the gym or workout studio, ditch your hoodie and throw on a bomber jacket or coat instead. You could also wear this activewear outfit to run errands during Spring or Autumn months. This formula is worn by the likes of, athleisure addict, Gigi Hadid.
