When I think about the turtleneck, an image of Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face immediately comes to mind. In the movie, Hepburn wants to blend in with the Parisian beatniks, so she sports a black turtleneck sweater with cigarette pants and a pair of penny loafers. This season the turtleneck is the trend du jour, after having been featured in nearly every Fall 2014 Ready to Wear show.
At this season’s shows, la maison de Chanel showcased a cut-out turtleneck crop top; the Michael Kors turtleneck was slick and sleeveless; The Row presented a turtleneck in their signature oversized style; while Derek Lam kept it cool with a classic, long sleeved color-block turtleneck.
There are many ways to wear a turtleneck; I like to wear oversized turtlenecks with my hair tucked into the collar, teamed with straight cut pants and heels or sneakers. If I’m wearing a classic black turtleneck I pair it with an A-line midi skirt, cinch my waist with a skinny belt (over the sweater) and bring the look together with a pair of booties.
